The City of Jewett is seeking a reliable, hardworking individual to join our Public Works team as a full-time Public Works Crew Member. In our community, Public Works employees wear many hats. You will perform a wide variety of manual tasks to keep our streets safe, our parks beautiful, and our utility systems running smoothly. This position requires physical stamina, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to serve the community.
Core Responsibilities
- Street Maintenance: Fills potholes with cold or hot mix asphalt, clears storm drains, and repairs damaged street signs.
- Parks and Groundskeeping: Mows grass, trims trees and brush along public right-of-ways, pulls weeds, rakes leaves, and cleans park restrooms or trash cans.
- Utility Assistance: Assists with basic digging and manual labor to expose, repair, or clear blockages in water and wastewater lines, and helps swap out residential water meters.
- Maintenance: Repair water distribution lines, sanitary sewer mains, and facility equipment. Assist in maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations
- Facility Upkeep: Performs minor repairs and general cleaning on municipal-owned buildings, community centers, and storage yards.
- Equipment Operation: Safely operate standard tools and light machinery such as commercial lawn mowers, chainsaws, air compressors, jackhammers, and small dump trucks.
- Inspections: Conduct routine plant checks, read meters, and collect facility samples.
- Safety & Reporting: Follow safety rules and report urgent problems or emergencies.
Job Requirements
- Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Driver’s License: Valid state driver's license (often requiring a clean driving record).
- Physical Strength: Ability to lift heavy objects (50+ lbs), bend, dig, and work outdoors in all weather conditions (extreme heat, cold, or rain).
- General Skills: Mechanical aptitude to use hand and power tools safely, plus the flexibility to take instructions from a sole supervisor or town mayor/clerk.
- Ability to obtain Water/wastewater licenses in the future.
